I was born in Monroe, Louisiana, January 28, 1955. My family moved to the Dallas area several months later and has been here ever since. As the old saying goes, “I wasn’t born here, but I got here as fast as I could!” I grew up in the Lake Highlands area when everything in North East Dallas was new. In fact, there wasn’t much here yet. I’ve seen Dallas and all of its suburbs grow from little to the Metroplex of today.
I took several basic industrial Tech (shop) classes in Junior High and High School although I went off to college as a business major. Later I decided coat and ties weren’t for me.
Graduating in May 1980 from North Texas State University in Denton, I earned an Industrial Technology Degree and returned to teach shop in Garland ISD for five years. When I left teaching, I formed my own businesses, painting and remodeling houses and also owning and running a janitorial service. The janitorial service lasted ten years whereas the painting and remodeling business lasted 17.
Burned out from running my own businesses, I returned to the classroom to teach at Hudson M.S. in Sachse, part of the Garland ISD. I enjoy teaching kids who want to learn; unfortunately a lot of students today don’t seem to care.
My wife and I are homeschooling our youngest son this year, which is where I got the idea to teach shop to home schooled kids, to kids who wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to take shop
The advantage of these courses is that one can learn so many lifelong skills which will always be helpful.
Married for thirty years in December 2007 to my wife, Jeffrie. (Yes that is a woman!) We have three sons, Matthew (24) a Texas A&M graduate who is now in law school in Houston, Benjamin (21) a junior at Texas A&M and finally Caleb (11), a soon to be home schooled fifth grader. Being a big TEXAS Longhorn fan is the only problem with my older boys being Aggies. After being down in the College Station area enough times, the place starts to grow on you. I sometimes even wear Aggie stuff now, that wouldn’t have happened in the old days.
I became a Christian in the summer of 1981 when working in a small cabinet shop. The boss was a Christian and always had Christian music playing. After “having” to listen to Christian music and to the owner and other employee who just happened to be a seminary student, they eventually converted me.
Since then, I have taught nursery through fifth grade Sunday School as well as a class on Foundations of the Faith. For my own personal growth, I weekly attend BSF.
