Class Description: Our basic biology course covers botany, human anatomy and physiology, zoology, and cellular and molecular biology. It also includes chapters on evolution and makes a great case for creation with specific facts that are confirmed throughout the book by looking at the intricate design of God’s creation.
Class format will vary, including lecture, discussion, labs and games. We will complete the entire text and the majority of the lab book. We will be doing multiple dissections and labs using a microscope. (Even those hesitant about dissections are usually eager to participate when they begin to understand the complexities of each creature.)
Why Abeka for Biology?
Formerly we made the case for Abeka Biology over Apologia Biology. Apologia has now updated their book and improved it in all the areas we found it lacking. After comparing the two books in their new editions, we can say that they are equally impressive in their presentation of the information. There are still differences between the two, but they both include great photography and interesting examples to improve student interest in the subject. Apologia uses the traditional approach in Biology starting with the cell and classification, then moving through living things from one celled organisms to invertebrates to vertebrates and ending with the human body and plants. Abeka goes in the opposite order starting with organisms that students are already familiar with (plants and themselves!) and then moves through the others ending with the cell and genetics. Apologia is stronger in the presentation of the cell and the chemistry of life. Abeka is stronger in the presentation of the overall picture of living organisms and in nutrition. All in all they both are easy to understand and do an exceptional job in making the information interesting and accessible to the student. More importantly, they both show the hand of God in His Design of all of creation. We would recommend either of these books for a high school course in Biology.
