Debate Team
Teacher: Eileen Chapman
Grades: 7 - 12
Meets: Monday 11:30 - 1:30
Class Description:
Debate can change your student’s life! Developing analytical and critical thinking skills are necessary to effectively impact today’s world. The Debate Team will participate in the homeschool debate competitions offered through the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (FCFCA). Homeschool debate was birthed through the vision of the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA). This type of debate encourages the debaters to use an argumentation style backed with thoughtful content. This remains a clash of ideas and concepts with true learning as the primary goal. The “wrangling over words” or “finessing the truth” with trickery is not taught. Students will learn how-to research, how-to write, use computer skills, engage in civics lessons, and master speaking skills. This two-hour class will equal 3 high school credits of your choice in the areas of civics, history, English, Computer Skills, and the electives of Speech or Debate (depending upon the effort and time of the student). In addition to debate, the competitions include a variety of speech presentations. For more information about this debate association and the current topic, visit www.ncfca.org.
