Effective Study Skills and Strategies
Teacher: Kathy Franda
Grades: 8 - 12
Meets: TBD - Next session is Fall 2010
Class Description:
Do you have trouble retaining your homework reading or studying effectively for tests? Do you forget to do part of your assignments? Are you overwhelmed by the amount of work in a class or completing writing assignments? It is probably NOT due to your IQ but rather due to your organization and study skills.. Come learn how to control and take charge of your academic life instead of reacting and floundering from week to week.
In this class we’ll learn effective study skills and strategies and more importantly we’ll practice them each week on your regular subjects so that they become habits. Interwoven through the class we’ll also learn test taking strategies for the SAT/PSAT as well as vocabulary review and practice questions. Studies show that exposure to SAT questions raises test day scores.
Topics include
· Time Management and Organization – of your assignments, your projects, your notebook, your life
· Homework - strategies to improve efficiency and retention
· Note Taking – what should you be writing and how to organize it so that you can use it to study
· Understanding vs. rote memorization – how to draw connections to learn
· Learning Style – what is yours and how to adapt your study skills to maximize your natural talents
· Test Prep – different kinds of tests and how to know what to study.
· SAT(PSAT) critical reading and writing strategies and practice
· 264 SAT vocabulary words/definitions set to music.
Each week we’ll spend the majority of class focusing on a study skill and how to use it in our regular life. Homework will be to actually practice it utilizing your regular academic subjects (whether it’s practicing notetaking, or organization or time management or whatever). 15 minutes of class will be spent on SAT/PSAT critical reading/writing strategies which will have 1 sheet of practice questions assigned for homework as well as 20 vocabulary words. These occur in a song for the student to listen and learn during the week – no flashcards, etc. Syllabus available upon request.
Maximum number of students: 8
Homework: SAT practice/vocabulary will take about ˝-1 hour a week. Study skills homework will be to use skill in other academic subjects during the week and as such shouldn’t take extra time.
Cost: $35 per month
Supplies that the students should bring to class: Notebook with dividers for Class Notes, SAT practice, and vocabulary. Notebook paper, black, blue and red pen + 3 more colors (ok if colored pencil), highlighter. No textbook needed.
