High School English Year 2

Teacher:  Lori Einfalt

Grades: 9 - 12

Meets:  Tuesday  11:30 - 12:30

Class Description: Counting as a high school English credit, this class builds on  English I, or it can stand alone as an advanced High School English class.  Using Total Language Plus curriculum, this class provides an integrated learning system that focuses on thinking and communication skills using literature as a base.  While reading, students will focus on: spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar review, punctuation review, writing, editing, analytical and critical thinking.  The particular titles chosen are classics of literature that will interest, challenge, and stimulate students to think well.  Upon the completion of each book, a writing assignment will be given, incorporating more of the Institute for Excellence in Writing skills. One month of the class will be devoted to researching, writing, and editing a super research essay. Titles to be read are:

Prerequisites: None

Maximum number of students: 12

Homework: 2-3 hours per week (Meeting only one hour per week, the success of this class rests upon the student’s diligence to complete all assigned homework.)

Cost:  $45 per month, $50 one time fee for student workbooks (teacher will purchase)  and handouts

Supplies students are expected to always bring to class:  3 ring binder with notebook paper, set of dividers, set of 3x5 index cards, book we are currently reading

Books:  Literature books may be purchased anywhere (suggest Amazon.com).  No specific editions are required.  It is strongly advised, however, that all four titles be purchased before class begins.  “I don’t have the book yet,” will not be an accepted excuse for late homework, resulting in a lower grade.
