Biblical Greek
Teacher:
Jill Zwyghuizen
Grades: 7-12
(parents are welcome too)
Meets: Tuesday 4:00 - 5:00
Class Description: This
is a class for anyone who wants to learn to read the New Testament in the
language it was written in.
We will work
through Mounce’s Basics of Biblical Greek
(2nd edition, 2003), which is the standard textbook used for
introductory Greek courses in most colleges and seminaries. This means that
after completing both semesters of this course, students should be capable of
testing-out of first year Greek at a Bible college. At the end of the course
students will be able to read the Greek New Testament with the aid of a Reader’s
Lexicon or some other lexical assistance.
Students
will have weekly translation assignments as well as weekly vocab quizzes. There
will also be three tests given over the course of each semester. Vocabulary
acquisition will be a major focus of the class because it is such an essential
part of reading Greek. It is no fun to read a text if you have to look up every
other word in the dictionary!
Prerequisites:
None
Maximum number of students: 12
Homework:
We will usually complete one lesson of the textbook per week. Each week the
student will be required to read the lesson from the textbook, translate the
assigned verses from the workbook, and memorize the vocabulary list for the
lesson. The time it takes to do the homework will vary from student to student,
but 3-4 hours per week is probably a reasonable estimate.

month
