Instrumental Ensemble

Teacher: Jenna Champlin

Grades:   6 - 12

Meets: Thursday  12:30 - 2:30

Class Description:   The THEO Instrumental Ensemble will provide an opportunity for students who already have some experience on a string, woodwind, brass or percussion instrument to learn the necessary skills for making music as an ensemble, as well as to improve their skills on their individual instruments. The focus will be on creating characteristic sounds, improving musical literacy, developing listening skills, and cultivating musical creativity and expression, all in an atmosphere that is fun and encouraging. We will accomplish these goals by exploring and preparing music of a variety of musical styles, and celebrate our success by sharing our hard work with audiences in performances! Students will also be given the opportunity to prepare solos and small ensembles.

PrerequisitesStudents must already have experience playing his/her instrument at a basic level. This class is a one year commitment.

Grades:  Grades will be earned based on practice records, class participation, written and playing assignments, and attendance at required performances. Homework will consist of practicing at least 150 minutes per week (that’s just 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week), and sometimes written assignments that reinforce class objectives. For the participation portion of the grade, students are expected to arrive on time, have all their supplies, and follow all instructions given by the director. Required performances will include a few home school football games, a Christmas concert and a spring concert.

Supplies:  Students must provide their own instrument, instrument accessories (reeds, valve oil, cleaning supplies, etc), and music stand, and must bring them to class every week along with their completed homework assignments, their music, a pencil, and of course a POSITIVE attitude! Students are encouraged to purchase a metronome for practicing at home. The teacher is more than happy to talk with parents who have any questions about purchasing the right supplies.

Performance Attire:  For football games, we wear the THEO t-shirt and jeans.  For concert performances, we wear a white dress shirt or blouse and black pants or skirt – no jeans, no tennis shoes.

Maximum number of students:  unlimited.  Parents who play are also welcome to join us at no cost.

Cost per student$50 per month, family discounts available to families with multiple children enrolled. A fee of $40 per family per year will be assessed to help pay for music and other necessary equipment.
