Excellence in American Literature

Meets:  Tuesday & Thursday 11:00 -12:00

Class Description: This is an in-depth study of the elements of fiction through American Literature designed for the advanced student. Using the literature and poetry that shaped our nation, we will delve into different periods of literature to discern our world view. Students will learn the art of annotation which will prepare them to write a literary analysis research paper in the spring. Since this is a college prep class, students will be required to research authors as well as read all required texts assigned. Students must have a working knowledge of grammar and the writing process.

Prerequisites: IEW writing course or teacher approval.

Maximum number of students: 16

Homework: 5+ hours a week

Cost:  $60 month

Supplies that the students should bring to class:  Autobiography- Franklin, Legend of Sleepy Hollow- Irving, Last of the Mohicans- Cooper, The Scarlet Letter- Hawthorne, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn- Twain, House of Mirth-Wharton, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald, Old Man and the Sea, Hemmingway.
