From Fiction to Film

Teacher:  Eileen Chapman

Grades:  9 - 12

Meets:  Thursday 9:00 - 10:00

Class Description: What happens to a classic work of literature when it is expressed through the language of sound and moving pictures?  Can a bridge be built between the traditional and the modern, between literature and film?  These are the questions discussed in the class From Literature to Film.  The students will read the literary work—take notes on observations from standard questions, and in turn, watch the film based upon the book.  They will compare the two through writing and discussion, study the difference between the telling and showing, analyze the shift in point of view and language, and finally compare themes.  During the second semester, the students will write their own short novel and adapt it to a play or film of their own original creation.  This class is an English credit or an elective.

Maximum number of students: 10

Homework:  One to two hours per week.

Cost:  $50 per month; $15 supply fee per

Supplies that the students should bring to class:  Book list to be distributed the week before class, plus two 2-pocket folders, papaer, pen or pencil
