Class Name

Teacher:  Lori Green

Grades: 9 - 12

Meets:  Tuesday  2:30 - 3:30

Class Description: How do I compare cell phone plans and choose the right one for me?  I need to “balance” my checking account?  Can I just charge it and pay for it later?  How much paint do I need to buy to paint my bedroom?   What is an insurance deductible?  Is there a tool that will make my calculations and comparisons a little easier?

Come join us as we dive into practical, everyday, consumer math.  No need to bring a calculator.  We are going to learn to use Excel to help us answer these questions.   We will learn how to format worksheets, enter formulas, and insert graphics and graphs in your worksheets.

Most of us are busy trying to complete the math classes that get our students into college.  We will cover enough material in class that it won’t interfere with an already heavy load.  There will be homework but it will be minimal.  If you need more homework for your child, just let me know.

Prerequisites:

Number of students: Minimum of 3, Maximum of 18

Homework: They will be less than 1 hour of homework per week.

Cost:  $40 per month

Supplies that the students should bring to class:  You don’t need to purchase any books.  Students will need a laptop with Excel (any version is fine).  They must bring their laptop to class each week.  If you have a laptop but not Excel, they can use Google spreadsheets as long as you don’t mind them being on the Internet.  Google doesn’t have all the functionality of Excel but it is free and will have the basics.
