Class Description:
Our 32 week class will cover Texas History from geography and Indians all the way through to the 21st century using the textbook Texas and Texans.
Class time will be spent covering the topic we read in the textbook, and most weeks will include a hands-on activity. I have taught Texas History for over ten years so have lots of pent up projects for the kids. Because the class is for 6-8th grade, I will try to include the textbook work and tests, but also hands on learning—like salt relief maps, lap books, and more so that the class isn’t beyond the difficulty of a 6-8th grade student.
However, each student is required to give one speech per student per semester for practice in public speaking. After every unit, the students take a fairly rigorous in-class test in order for them to practice in-class test taking. The good news? The combined year long tests only count for 10% of their total grade. My goal is to prepare them for in-class, timed tests without severe consequences. Some students do not test well, so this aspect of Texas history will allow them to become more comfortable taking in-class tests and learn skills to help them manage for their future in high school and college when the test scores will be a larger percentage of their grade.
I also spend a good deal of time working on note taking, outlining and study techniques to prepare the students for high school when the material will be much harder and the consequences more
The textbook is a fairly interesting read, so few complain about the weekly reading.
