Advanced Placement Biology
Teacher: Paula Smith
Ages: 16 and older
Meets: T/F (Check the time on both days, meets at different times)
Class Description: This will be an AP Biology course for serious students followed by the AP Biology exam which takes place the first week of May. The text book used will be Apologia's Human Body - Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Jay Wile. This is Apologia's advanced biology course. Combined with Exploring Creation With Biology (or another equivalent text book), it gives the student the equivalent of a university biology course.
In other words, these two courses together cover the entire "advanced placement" (AP) curriculum. In order to take this course, the student MUST have completed a first-year biology course AND a first-year chemistry course. It covers both the anatomy and the physiology of the human body’s 11 organ systems in detail. This will be a study of all the systems of the human body as well as a course in comparative anatomy. The students will gain experience using a high power microscope (1000X) as well as do extensive dissections in this course.Passing the AP exam (3, 4, or 5) out of a possible score of 5 will give the student college credit for Biology.
Why the AP route? The AP route provides a safer environment for the student over the dual credit route for this course. The AP Biology course is a great addition on the students high school transcript since the universities are emphasizing AP high school courses for the serious students. The student may still take Biology in college, but the universities are looking for AP scholars that are willing to take on challenging high school courses. The risk is minimum, in that, a student that does not feel that they can pass with a high score does not need to take the AP exam, yet they may still put the AP course on their high school transcript. While a student that takes the dual credit course at a community college and struggles is stuck with the grade issued on his or her transcript. It is a win win situation!
This class will use Apologia Biology II textbook in order to prepare the students to take the Advanced Placement Biology exam next May.
Prerequisites: The student must have completed Biology and Chemistry.
Maximum number of students that you will allow to take this class: 12
Cost per student (numeric only): $75 per month (September - May)
Homework: This class will require extensive homework.
Supplies that the students should bring to class:
Textbook: The Human Body, Fearfully and Wonderfully Made! and
The Human Body - The Anatomy Coloring book, 3rd Edition, Cost: $20.00
Authors: Wynn Kapit & Lawrence M. Elson
This is not a child’s coloring book! Use of this book is one of the best
ways to learn and memorize anatomical details and nomenclature. Many
college and medical students use this book in their study of human
anatomy. A ‘must-buy’ for anatomy students. WARNING: This
is an anatomy book and may include more detail then you want a young
child to see.
