Advanced Economics

Teacher: Terri Threadgill

Grades:   9-12

Meets:  Tuesday 11:30 - 1:15

Class Description:   Advanced Economics is a fast-paced class which will prepare your student to take the Advanced Placement Macroeconomics exam in May 2010.  I cannot guarantee that they will pass the exam but our Tuesday class meetings will work through half of our textbook:  Economics by McConnell and Brue, Sixteenth Edition, ISBN 007-124914-1 to do my best to prepare them for the exam, which will cost $70-80 for signing up with a private school locally. (Details will follow in February when sign ups begin.)

Economics is a relevant topic for every high school student, but not every student needs to tackle it to the depth that we will cover in Honors Economics.  We won’t have a research paper as in my Abeka Economics class, but there will be plenty of writing and practice test taking as we work our way through previously offered exam questions and essay questions.

The exam includes 50 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes plus three essay questions to be written over a 60 minute period.   Because of my education and experience in both the business and homeschool world, I have tailored my lesson plans to introduce economic principles, but will also offer  opportunity for the students to experience outlining and leading class discussion from their chapter notes.

Maximum number of students: 10

Cost per student (numeric only): $60 per month (January - May)

Homework:  In order to thoroughly cover the book and prepare for the exams, class homework takes one to two hours each week as the students read the chapter, take the online quizzes and work through a few problems from the back of each chapter in the textbook.   We will have a few quizzes, a mid-term exam and a final exam but our real target is the AP Macro Economics Exam in mid-May 2010.

Supplies that the students should bring to class:

Economics by McConnell and Brue, Sixteenth Edition, ISBN 007-124914-1

Loose-leaf paper and a 3” binder plus multiple colored pencils and pens to be used in making flash cards and drawing graphs.

Index cards to be used in making flash cards
