Biology

Teacher: Shirley Day

Grades:   9-12

Meets:  M/W Two Sessions 12:00 - 1:30 and 3:00 - 4:30.  Both sessions are the same.

Class Description:   Our basic biology course covers botany, human anatomy and physiology, zoology, and cellular and molecular biology. It also includes chapters on evolution and makes a great case for creation with specific facts that are confirmed throughout the book by looking at the intricate design of God’s creation.

Class format will vary, including lecture, discussion, labs and games.  We will complete the entire text and the majority of the lab book.  We will be doing multiple dissections and labs using a microscope. (Even those hesitant about dissections are usually eager to participate when they begin to understand the complexities of each creature.)

Why Abeka for Biology?

Although we find that Apologia is the best curriculum for most of our other science classes, it is not the case with Biology.  What Abeka has in common with Apologia is that it does an excellent job giving practical examples to explain the concepts and point out the hand of our Infinitely Wise Creator, God.  It also has an excellent selection of labs for each chapter.

Abeka offers many more dissections than Apologia, .  Most of us do not look forward to this part of Biology, but as we study each unique creation, it actually becomes fascinating to see how God has perfectly designed each creature/plant to carry out the exact same functions in its own particular habitat.  The other area that Abeka surpasses Apologia in is the photography included in the book.  Because we are studying living things, it is an asset to have such outstanding photographs to illustrate the variety and out of the ordinary details in God’s creation.  All in all it is easy to understand and does an exceptional job in making the information interesting and accessible to the student.

Maximum number of students: 12

Cost per student (numeric only): $75 per month plus one $25 lab supply fee

Homework: Homework will take about 1 hour each day.
