Beginning Percussion

Class Description:  This class is designed to teach students to play the percussion instruments. Students will be taught the basics of instrumental music including instrument care and maintenance, proper technique, reading music notes and rhythm, playing in an ensemble and expression. We will focus primarily on learning the snare drum, as well as bass drum, cymbals, bells and auxiliary percussion instruments. This class is does NOT cover learning to play the drum set. Grading is based on weekly practice cards, playing tests, written tests, class participation and performance attendance.

Maximum number of students that you will allow to take this class: 10

Cost per student: $30 per month. There will be a family discount for those with more than one child who participates in the class. There is also a supply fee of $10 per semester to cover the cost of additional music, equipment and other necessities.

Homework:  30 minutes of practice is required each day, 5 days a week, not including our class time.

PrerequisitesNone. 

Textbook: “Simple Steps to Successful Snare Drum” by Kennan Wylie. This book can be ordered from many places on the internet or may be purchased at Lone Star Percussion in Dallas. Other area music stores may carry it as well.

Supplies:  Each student needs to provide his/her own snare drum (see teacher for details). A practice pad is optional. Students need to bring instrument, music, music stand, spiral notebook and pencil to class. A metronome is highly recommended.
