The Jacobs’ geometry text is broken down into
brief, manageable lessons that lead the student through the process of reasoning
deductively. Each lesson has ample
practice problems that help solidify the concepts, with extensive reviews with
each chapter.
We will be following an accelerated schedule for
this summer session; covering five to six lessons in each three hour class
setting. Each student will be
provided with a spiral notebook to enable them to record theorems, corollaries,
postulates, and definitions for use during the course.
This notebook will be useful to them because they will be authorized to
use it during tests and exams. The
emphasis will be on understanding the principles rather than rote memorization,
although the students will begin to memorize the material with repeated usage.
The MWF
schedule was constructed to allow days between classroom sessions to enable
students to complete homework and tests, and to review the material while
keeping their notebooks current. The
schedule is attached for your information.
Because
class time is limited, chapter tests will be take home documents.
Parents are asked to administer the test and then have the student return
it to me at the next class for grading.
As I mentioned above, the students will be authorized to use the notebook
when taking the test, but not their textbooks.
With regard to homework assignments, I recommend that the student work through the questions and then check their answers, rather than do them with the answer book in front of them. The emphasis is on them understanding the principles and developing the ability to solve the problems on their own.
Note:
I do not recommend anyone take this accelerated summer session unless the
student is prepared to put in 5 to 6 hours between classes reviewing the
material, keeping the notebook current, and completing the homework and tests.
The material tends to build chapter by chapter, and the pace established
for covering the material allows little margin for catching up if a student
falls behind.
