Speech & Debate Camps

Come join the fun for a fantastic week of learning the skills that will change your life. THEO is offering your choice of Speech, Interp, and Debate Camps which are open to both novice and experienced students.  These camps are designed to expand a student’s education by providing the necessary skills they can use for competition or JUST FOR FUN! So, come meet new friends at THEO’s speech and debate summer camps.

June 4th-8th

THEO Speech Camp:  Join Donna Szumila, coach of THEO’s Forensics Club, for a great week of speech through Original Oratory, Impromptu and Extemporaneous Speaking. The basics of communication and speech structure are where it all begins and by the end of the week each student will be delivering impromptu and extemporaneous speeches as well as have researched and written an Original Oratory ready for competition in the fall. Coach Szumila provides practice and individual coaching throughout the week in preparation of the THEO Exposition where students deliver speeches to parents and friends in conjunction with the THEO Interp Camp.

Camp is open to both novice and experienced students. Individual assessments will be made with the goal being to encourage each student to the best of their ability. For those students completely new to forensics, THEO Speech Camp is an ideal place to start!

June 4th-8th

THEO Interp Camp:  Come learn the art of interpretation from one of the finest interp coaches in North Texas! Melinda Bellatti brings her vast experience in speech and theater to THEO offering this unique opportunity to learn the interpretation events of Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Prose and Poetry.  You will have great fun as you learn how to choose material, how to cut a piece, character placement and development.  Coach Bellatti provides individual coaching as well as small group practice all in preparation of the THEO Exposition where you will deliver your pieces to parents and friends to show off your new learned skills.

Novice Students: Coach Bellatti has numerous already pre-cut selections for you to choose from.

Experienced Students: bring a favorite piece or cutting and Coach Bellatti wil help you perfect it for championship delivery!

This camp is designed for both novice and experienced students in interpretation. The art of interpretation is like no other skill as you will have a chance to expand your acting and theater talents. If you would like to perform a DUO Interpretation contact Coach Bellatti before camp and she will be happy to assist you and your partner at camp.

July 16th-21st

THEO Lincoln/Douglas & Congressional Debate Camp: Communication, presentation, research, analyzing arguments are skills useful in every aspect of life. Debate teaches all of these and is fun, too. Come join Coach Donna Szumila of THEO Forensics for a great week of learning these skills which will change your life. In Congressional Debate you will learn how to write Bills and Resolutions on a policy matter of your choosing. Then you will debate these resolutions at a Congressional session at the end of the week. Lincoln/Douglas debate is a one-on-one debate which will teach you to argue “for” and “against” resolutions of value. You will learn how to research the resolution topic, write your own case, and communicate it effectively.

This camp is open to both novice and experienced debaters.

July 23rd-28th

THEO Team Policy Debate Camp: Debate is about change and is the process which determines how change should come about. In Team Policy Debate you will debate a public policy resolution and work with a partner to form a “debate team.” You will research, write your own case, and learn effective communication to argue both for and against the resolution. Debate is fun and can give you the skills you need for success. So, join Donna Szumila, coach of THEO’s Forensics Club, for a great week of Team Policy debate!

Novice: The camp will provide novice debaters with the fundamental skills needed to debate. They will learn how to break down the resolution, how to research, how to write their cases and finally they will debate in teams and learn the skills necessary to be polished communicators.

Advanced: For experienced students in debate the focus will be on perfecting their skills and abilities while expanding into advanced debate theory. After researching and writing your own case, you will develop disad’s and write a counterplan. By the end of the week students will be debating and honing their skills to prepare them for competition.
